Caterpillar Keeps Rolling On

Caterpillar Inc or CAT as the company is also known as is a huge multinational company. The corporation manufactures, designs and supplies heavy plant machinery and engines primarily but has diversified in recent years to begin trading in various markets such as insurance and other financial products.

The company can trace its founding all the way back to 1925 and the merging of the C.L. Best Tractor Company and the Holt Manufacturing Company to create a new business, the California based Caterpillar Tractor Company. As recently as 1986, the company restructured and reorganised leaving California to become Delaware based under the current distinct monicker, CaterPillar Inc. The current headquarters for the company are located Peoria, Illinois.

The company is the largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment globally and also produces engines for the natural gas and diesel industries including huge industrial gas turbines for power generation and other uses.

Expansion to Emerging Markets

Caterpillar has expanded globally and in November 1999 completed the set up of a Russian manufacturing base near St. Petersburg. In typical Russian fashion it was built through a severe Winter with temperatures as low as -25 celsius.

Production at Caterpillar's first Chinese manufacturing facility began in March 2009,manufacturing motorgraders and medium sized wheel loaders. Caterpillar has been operational in South America for decades now and has been manufacturing plant machinery and engines from Brazil since the beginning of the Sixties.

One of the interesting points I have discovered about the Caterpillar brand is that it is often licensed out to generate income. The brand name, the trademark and the logo are literally leased by companies. Footwear bearing the brand name is a perfect example of this licensing out of the brand. Caterpillar boots have a reputation for being tough, hardwearing and durable. The connotations associated with the powerful plant machinery the company produces have reinforced this perception of the footwear and aided the reputation the brand enjoys for protective shoes and boots.

Produced Under License

However, Caterpillar boots are in fact manufactured by Wolverine World wide, the parent company of Hush Puppies. It has been producing safety boots and casual footwear under license worldwide since use of the brand is an example of clever marketing for the producer of the footwear and the brand and both benefit from the association with each other. Other licensed products bearing the companies logos and branding include clothing, small scale models of the CAT machinery, watches and hats. They are generally marketed as tough and durable products just like the bulldozers and other heavy plant equipment in use throughout the world bearing the distinctive logo and trademark yellow livery.
